Course Content

The GCSE English Language and Literature Double Award enables you to appreciate how language connects you to the world around you, to engage with a rich range of texts from different periods and by diverse writers, and to develop and apply your own use of language, through written and verbal communication.

How you will be assessed

• Examined Units (60%): These units are assessed through exams worth 60% of the qualification. Each exam lasts 90 minutes and includes extract-based questions, an extended essay and creative writing.
• Non-Examined Assessments (40%): These units, worth 40%, involve tasks assessing written responses and oracy skills.

 

Assessment Objectives

• Unit 1: Context and Meaning. Engage with a variety of poetry from the WJEC anthology, focusing on the themes of context and meaning.
• Unit 2: Belonging. Study a prose text to explore the concept of belonging, addressing themes such as community, cynefin (a sense of place) and citizenship.
• Unit 3: Influence and Power. Investigate a range of non-fiction texts, examining how writers and speakers exert influence and power, and shape opinions and decisions.
• Unit 4b: Motivations. Study a drama or prose text, focusing on the motivations of writers and characters by exploring their attitudes, beliefs, and behaviours. Produce creative literary writing.
• Unit 5: Continuity and Change. Delve into a Shakespeare play and pre-20th century poetry, considering the concept of continuity and change, and examining how language, attitudes and ideas evolve over time.
• Unit 6: Connections. Analyse non-fiction texts to explore the concept of connections, identifying links between texts and relating them to time, place, language and relationships.
