Course Content

The GCSE in Art and Design builds upon the skills learnt throughout Key Stage 3. Pupils will start by responding to a set brief. They are required to undertake contextual research on artists and art movements. They will produce drawings and designs from observation, memory and imagination from primary and secondary sources and collect visual research on a theme.

They will experience a range of materials and techniques such as drawing, painting, printmaking, model making, wire, glass, ceramics, textiles and more. They will learn how to communicate using 2D and 3D visual language, as well as working to a project brief, and produce final pieces of art work.

How you will be assessed:
  • Controlled Assessment 1: 60% Coursework Portfolio;
  • Controlled Assessment 2: 40% Externally set task & 10-hour exam.

Assessment evidence must be presented in the form of A3 sketchbooks, A3 design sheets, samples of materials and processes, written notes, essays, presentations, evaluations and final textile work.

Additional Information/Skills:

Pupils would benefit from equipping themselves with a range of media and resources for this course.
Pupils would benefit from keeping their Key Stage 3 Art and DT work to support their work at Key Stage 4.
Good attendance is essential to successfully complete this course.
