The Spanish GCSE is a linear 4-unit course assessing Listening (20%), Reading & Writing (15% & 35%), and Speaking (30%). It focuses on spontaneous speech, translation, and high-frequency vocabulary across three main themes: identity/culture, Wales/world, and study/employment.

Course Structure and Assessment

  • Unit 1: Oracy (30%): Non-examination assessment (NEA) involving a role-play, a photo card discussion, and a conversation.
  • Unit 2: Reading and Writing (15%): A non-examination assessment focusing on application of language.
  • Unit 3: Listening (20%): Written examination assessing understanding of spoken Spanish.
  • Unit 4: Reading and Writing (35%): Written examination focusing on comprehension and extended writing.

 

Key Themes
The course is built around three broad, interconnected themes:

  • Identity and Culture: Youth culture, customs, traditions, and self-relationships.
  • Wales and the World: Local area, travel, tourism, and environmental issues.
  • Current and Future Study and Employment: School life, education, and career plans.

 

Key Skills Developed

  • Grammar: Foundation learners cover present, preterite, imperfect, future, and perfect tenses, while Higher learners add pluperfect and conditional tenses.
  • Translation: Both from Spanish to English/Welsh and vice-versa.
  • Communication: Developing spontaneous speech and effective written communication.

 

The qualification is designed to foster a, deep understanding of the language in various contexts, preparing students to communicate effectively and confidently.
