Course Content

The WJEC course in Food and Nutrition gives pupils the opportunity to develop their knowledge, understanding and skill in cooking, applying the principles of food science, nutrition and healthy eating.

How you will learn

Pupils will:

  • Study safe and effective cooking skills by planning, preparing and cooking a variety of food products;
  • Develop knowledge and understanding of the properties, nutritional values and chemical characteristics of food;
  • Develop understanding of the relationship between diet, nutrition and health;
  • Develop understanding of the economic, environmental, ethical and socio-cultural influences on food;
  • Develop knowledge and understanding of the sensory qualities of food and microbiological food safety when handling food;
  • Develop understanding and explore a range of ingredients and processes from different culinary traditions including traditional Welsh recipes.

Unit 1 – Principles of Food & Nutrition
Digital Examination – 1 hour 30 minutes
40% of the qualification.

Unit 2 – Food Investigation
Non-examination assessment – 8 hours
20% of the qualification.

Unit 3 – Food & Nutrition in Action
Non-examination assessment – 12 hours
40% of the qualification
