PDG statement of intent:

At Christ the Word Catholic School our mission statement is to ‘Educate our young in the Light of Christ’, this mission underpins our approach to using the PDG and EY PDG grant effectively and equitably.

Our intent is to ensure that all pupils, regardless of background, have access to high-quality learning experiences that enable them to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. We recognise that poverty can present barriers to learning, and we are committed to removing these barriers through targeted support that aligns with Welsh Government national priorities, including:

  • Improving learner progression and achievement for all pupils.
  • Enhancing wellbeing and mental health, ensuring every child feels safe, supported, and ready to learn.
  • Increasing attendance and engagement, so that every pupil benefits fully from the opportunities school provides.
  • Closing the attainment gap between learners from disadvantaged backgrounds and their peers.

Our strategy will focus on:

  • Wellbeing and Emotional Support
Provide targeted interventions and nurturing environments that prioritise pupils’ emotional health, resilience, and sense of belonging.
  • High-Quality Teaching and Learning
Ensure that all pupils, particularly those eligible for PDG support, receive excellent teaching and access to enrichment opportunities that raise aspirations and achievement.
  • Creating an inclusive all‑age setting that builds a community where every learner — from the youngest to the oldest — feels valued, supported, and able to thrive.

Through this plan, we consider our special mission as Catholic educators and aim to create a culture where every child can achieve their full potential, develop confidence, and prepare for a happy, successful, and fulfilling life as an active citizen in Wales and beyond.
